John Brasfield was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He is a product of Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and he graduated with honors while lettering in four sports. He was voted “Most Remarkable Kid” by the L.A. Times. He attended Cerritos Junior College where he earned honors before transferring to Azusa Pacific University where he earned his degree in business administration. While attending Azusa he also played football and competed on the track team.
John was a Regional Business Review Specialist for Restaurant.com traveling up and down the coast to provide backend reports for businesses. He later took a job to follow his passion and began to work in Special Education for LAUSD. After he graduated from college, he played professional Arena Football and also developed a passion for boxing and became a standout amateur boxer. He made a choice to forgo a professional boxing career to fulfill a promise he had made to the kids he worked with in general and special education. Running for school board and becoming a School board member.
Early in John’s career with LAUSD, he was able to incorporate his passion for sports when he created a positive incentive based sports program with other educational support professionals. The program was launched and took place during lunch time. The school spirit changed and teachers raved about the program’s effect on student behavior and he earned the name “Coach B”.
When John left that location and went on to another community, he continued to use the incentive based sports program and also created a John Wooden Essay contest. The students were awarded tickets to a basketball game for writing about the principle of Mr. Wooden and how it applied to their lives. He also created The Night of Champion, which has now become a tradition where every student-athlete is celebrated with their parents in attendance. In addition, he helped bring back a student lead paper which provided many opportunities for writing comprehension.
John Brasfield has worked in LAUSD schools since he was 15 years old and has had the opportunity to experience over 140 schools during two decades of service. He has also served on the 2018-2019 Good Teaching Planning Committee and is a part of the CTA 2019 service center winner as a part of Student CTA. He has received his Master in School Counseling from USC. He formerly served as a CTA State Representative while completing work on his masters degree. With the support of SEIU Mr. Brasfield was able to lobby for more funding for children with disabilities earlier in 2019. He is a strong supporter of UTLA and a tremendous advocate for special education. He currently is working and advancing in the game of golf while developing the connection to higher education with a holistic approach to expanded curriculum. He is a visionary minded leader with the model of safety first creating an environment for enriched learning while working security part time preparing for the campaign for LAUSD
